Promising start for cricket team

On 15 October Kent College Dubai embarked on another maiden voyage, this time with its first U17 cricket match. We fielded 11 players from the Senior School to compete in the annual ADIB National School League sponsored by Sports 360.

The side was captained by Vriitya Rudhravel Sasirekha (Year 10); he won the toss and elected to bat first. Vriitya and Ben Starling (Year 7) opened the batting for Kent College and quickly got the scoreboard moving. It wasn't long before the first four was beautifully placed on the boundary. After that, the boys grew in confidence and were picking the right shots and striking the ball perfectly. Ben unfortunately was first batsman out and then Shariq came in with 8 overs to play and one goal... score runs! This was a high-risk tactic but one that scored him and the team some much needed runs. We finished our 20 overs with an impressive 120 runs for 4 wickets. A very respectable total considering our players were facing bowling from boys three if not four years older.

Kent College went into field and quickly showed that they were here to play a serious game. Unfortunately, fielding with 9 players instead of 11 is always going to be tough but the boys covered the pitch very well. There were plenty of gaps for the batsman to exploit but the Kent College team did very well in stopping the boundaries and keeping the opponents run total down.

Despite losing by 7 wickets, the boys and coaches were buzzing. Two-thirds of the team are younger than the player age but you would never have guessed that watching them play. To be noted were the outstanding performances from Vriitya Rudhravel Sasirekha for his captaincy and scoring 74 runs, alongside him Ben Starling who played and bowled superbly.

We look forward to the next round on Saturday 22 October.
